About this template
A 1-level curriculum map is the simplest useful picture of a program: each course is connected to the learning outcomes it teaches. There is a single layer of structure — courses on one side, outcomes on the other — and the lines between them show coverage. Nothing more to configure, nothing to get lost in.
This is the best place to start if you have never mapped a curriculum before. It captures the one relationship that matters most for review and accreditation — “which course covers which outcome” — without the added complexity of multi-level hierarchies, prerequisites, or nested groups. Once this feels natural, the 2-level curriculum map adds subject areas or program levels on top of the same idea.
Because the structure is deliberately minimal, it is fast to fill in by hand and even faster to generate: paste a syllabus or an outcomes list and the AI slots your real courses and outcomes into this shape.

- Rename the outcome nodes to your program’s actual learning outcomes (or paste them in and let AI create them).
- Add your courses as nodes and draw a line from each course to every outcome it addresses.
- Read a few connections aloud as sentences (“Intro to Biology addresses Scientific Reasoning”) to sanity-check direction.
- Look for outcomes with no incoming lines — those are coverage gaps worth flagging.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a 1-level and a 2-level curriculum map?
- A 1-level map has a single layer — courses linked directly to outcomes. A 2-level map adds a grouping layer above the courses (for example, subject areas or program years), so you can see structure at two scales. Start with 1-level; move to 2-level when a single layer feels too flat for your program.
- How do I add my own courses and outcomes?
- Fork the template, then either add nodes manually and rename them, or paste your syllabus / outcomes list and let Outcomap’s AI populate the map with your real content. You keep the structure; the AI fills in the specifics.
- Do I need to know my prerequisites to use this template?
- No. A 1-level curriculum map is about coverage (course → outcome), not sequencing. If you later want to show prerequisite chains, you can add “requires” relationships or start from a curriculum-analysis map instead.
- Can I turn this into an accreditation map later?
