About this template

A research portfolio map is a template for research administrators to see a grants portfolio as a network: grants organised by faculty, linked to their funding sponsors, with dependency links between projects. It answers questions a spreadsheet can’t — which sponsors fund what, and which projects depend on others.

Outcomap isn’t only for curriculum. The same graph engine models any structured set of entities and relationships, and a grants portfolio — institutions, faculties, sponsors, grants, and their dependencies — is a natural fit.

Fork it, rename the faculties, add your grants and sponsors, and connect “funds” and “depends on” relationships to see the portfolio’s real shape.

When to use it

  • You manage a research grants portfolio and want a visual overview.
  • You need to show which sponsors fund which grants across faculties.
  • You want to surface dependencies between projects.
  • You want an interactive artefact for leadership or reporting instead of a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this template for?
Research administrators and research office staff who manage a portfolio of grants and want to see sponsors, faculties, and project dependencies as one connected picture rather than rows in a spreadsheet.
What’s the difference between the “funds” and “depends on” links?
“Funds” connects a sponsor to the grant it finances. “Depends on” connects two projects where one relies on another — for example, shared infrastructure or a prerequisite result.
This isn’t curriculum — why is it in Outcomap?
Outcomap’s engine visualises any graph of entities and relationships. Research portfolios, org structures, and knowledge bases all model cleanly the same way curricula do.
